This is a 1999 Riserva in magnum, now more than twenty-five years on. Vigna Elena was the first vineyard the family planted, in 1991, the year Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore's daughter Elena was born. The chick on the label is a drawing she made for her parents when she was three. The vineyard is about a hectare inside Novello's Ravera cru, calcareous clay facing southeast at about 380 meters, and it's planted to Nebbiolo Rosé, a type of Nebbiolo the house values for its brilliant garnet colour and intense floral perfume. Plenty of people criticised the decision to plant it, and the wine has since earned real prestige. Cogno describes the approach as their grandparents' way (old training system, lower yields, native yeasts, big barrels) and calls Vigna Elena a Barolo for purists that ignores taste trends. A magnum is a lovely way to meet a mature Riserva, so stand it upright for a day and decant it gently off its sediment.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 1999 Barolo Vigna Elena shows the more brooding side of the year in its black fruit, smoke, tobacco, menthol, licorice and melted road tar. Rich and full-bodied, the Vigna Elena captures plenty of the signatures of the year, but with less elegance than is the norm today. Then again, in 1999 the vines in this parcel were just eight years old." —Antonio Galloni

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin or pappardelle with a wild boar or hare ragù; braised beef in Barolo; roast leg of lamb with rosemary; wild boar stew; a plate of aged Castelmagno or a wedge of Gorgonzola to finish.

Tasting Profile

Expect traditional Barolo aged in large barrels: a perfumed nose of violets and dried flowers over sour cherry and tar, with the floral lift the house prizes in its Nebbiolo. A mature Riserva typically moves toward dried cherry, leather, truffle and forest floor, with softened but still firm tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish.
