The single-parcel wine that put Envínate's Ribeira Sacra project on the map. Camiño Novo ('new road') is a small amphitheater-shaped vineyard in the Amandi subzone — the heart of Ribeira Sacra — facing southeast at 430 meters on pure slate. The vines are 70 years old, 90% Mencía with about 10% Garnacha Tintorera mixed in. The four-winemaker Envínate collective (Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, José Ángel Martínez) farms it without chemicals, ferments whole-cluster with native yeasts in open-top tanks, and ages it in neutral wood. The character is unmistakable: floral and spicy on the nose, taut and saline on the palate, with the kind of textural transparency that only old vines and steep slate can produce. A Spanish red that drinks like Burgundy's wilder cousin.

More about Envinate

Just a couple of years ago the wines of Envinate were very, very off the radar. Like everything in the world of delicious, naturally made wines, that has changed! Now we eagerly anticipate the next release, get just a case or less of each cuvée, and then watch them disappear in the blink of an eye.

For those unfamiliar, the group of four friends behind the project have nailed a locals' perspective on growing areas that the world is just coming to appreciate. Between Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands, they bottle clear expressions of the vineyards with which they work. Having started Envinate as a consultancy while in enology school, the friends set out to enrich the communities within these historically neglected areas. By splitting up and living in each of these regions, they have been able to foster relationships with older generations of growers and farmers allowing them to identify the best vineyard sites with a collective understanding beyond their experience.

With a strong technical education, The Four craft wines of precision and clarity. Never manipulated, never doctored, and a lack of chemicals in the vineyard, these wines are liquid art, a purists expression of terrior. They honor not only the region from which they come, but also the local stewards who have cared for these vineyards, often for generations.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Reach for roast pork, lamb chops with rosemary, or duck confit. Also lovely with mushroom-forward pastas, grilled tuna, or a board of Iberian charcuterie and aged sheep's-milk cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, vivid, finely structured. Wild strawberry, sour cherry, and pomegranate over crushed slate, violets, and a hint of black pepper. Bright acidity, silky tannins, and a long mineral-driven finish.
