Empreinte Noire is Eric Rodez's imprint of a single Ambonnay harvest. It's always a vintage Champagne, always 100% Pinot Noir, and always meant to show how the house reads that year in its Grand Cru village. This bottle is the 2011. Rodez builds it from five to seven of his own Ambonnay parcels. Think of this as the other side of the coin from a multi-vintage blend: those are built for consistency, while Empreinte Noire is about one village in one year, left unvarnished. It's a grower's Champagne in the truest sense, and a rewarding bottle to open with friends who care about where their Pinot Noir comes from.

More about Eric Rodez

The eighth generation of Champagne growers in Ambonnay, Eric Rodez trained at the legendary Krug house and brought that same precision to his family's biodynamic vineyard. His champagnes are proof that grower Champagne can stand with any house wine—elegant, mineral-driven, and entirely natural in their expression of the terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morel cream sauce; aged Comté or Gruyère; pork loin with apples; seared scallops in brown butter; mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

Expect the generous, structured style typical of Ambonnay Pinot Noir: red apple, red berries and a touch of brioche, with a broad, vinous palate carried by fine bubbles and bright, chalky acidity. It typically finishes dry, long and savoury. Think of a Champagne with real red-wine weight behind it, made for the dinner table as much as the aperitif.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
