Marcel Juge works 100% Syrah from steep granite hillsides, ferments whole-cluster under a submerged cap, ages in old demi-muids and bottles without filtration, exactly as it was done decades ago. The 2009 came from a lush, opulent Northern Rhone vintage, giving a Cornas with unusual flesh and amiability wrapped around the village's classic savory grip. Marcel Juge was an icon of Cornas, making small quantities of beautifully expressive Syrah in a little cellar beneath his home. His wines were gentler and more perfumed than Cornas's brawny reputation suggests, yet built to age for decades. The 2015 is believed to be among his final releases, and he passed away in 2019. Any bottle that surfaces now is a rare taste of old Cornas.
