Cannubi, the most storied cru in the commune of Barolo, from traditionalist Francesco Rinaldi in the great 2010 vintage. The family works this celebrated hillside the old-fashioned way, with long macerations and extended aging in large Slavonian casks, no new oak in sight. Cannubi is the perfumed, graceful expression of Barolo, all lift and aromatic detail, and 2010's marriage of structure and freshness shows it off beautifully. Younger and more tightly wound than the 2006, this has a long road ahead. Decant now, or cellar with confidence.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Translucent and sensual, Rinaldi's 2010 Barolo Cannubi graces the palate with exquisite finesse. The floral aromatics, silky tannins and precise, sculpted fruit are pure Cannubi. Mint, hard candy and cinnamon are laced into the soft, gracious finish. Disarmingly open and seductive, the 2010 is absolutely joyous today, yet it also clearly has the pedigree to age well for many years." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2010 Barolo Cannubi is an elegant wine that already shows pretty signs of its bottle evolution. The fruit is subtle and pulled to the background. The wine offers up-front aromas of rum cake, dried fruit, leather, tobacco and cured meat. This Nebbiolo shows a strongly savory side, with crushed mineral, licorice and toasted hazelnut." —Monica Larner

Decanter

94 points

"Fresh and ripe with full black fruit aromas and emerging notes of spice; nutmeg and black pepper. Pungent floral aromas and bright red cherry and raspberry jam flavours linger nicely on the polished finished."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Elegant and juicy, featuring bright cherry, strawberry, floral and earth aromas and flavors. There is a seamless quality here despite the youth, showing fine potential and longevity, with firm, integrated tannins."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"This stunning Barolo emerges from the glass with layers of perfumed rose, violet, bright berry and balsamic scents. The vibrant palate is textbook Barolo, delivering intense red berry, black raspberry, moist earth, white pepper and nutmeg and alongside great energy. A burst of orange zest signals the close. Best after 2018." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Francesco Rinaldi

One of the last of the old-school Barolo traditionalists. Founded in 1870 in Barolo proper, run now by nieces Paola and Piera Rinaldi (and Piera's daughters). No new oak, long maceration, aged in huge Slavonian oak botti—exactly how they did it a hundred years ago. Brunate and Cannubi are the stars.
