Pouilly-Fuissé represents the Mâconnais at its most ambitious—and Chagnoleau's 2024 Madrigal is built for age, not immediate gratification. At 350 meters altitude, old vines thrive in marl-limestone with iron oxides, horse-plowed to preserve soil life. Selected barrels showing austerity and reduction were aged 16-18 months in Burgundy casks with restrained new wood. This is a wine that tastes tight now, asking you to cellar it.

More about Frantz Chagnoleau

The domaine is run by Frantz and his wife, Caroline Gon. Frantz trained with Mâcon legend Olivier Merlin, and Caroline served a long tenure as head winemaker at Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Burgundy icon Dominique Lafon’s Mâconnais project. You can be sure that these two intimately understand every possible nuance of Mâconnais terroir.

Since 2013, they’ve farmed organically across a collection of old vine, high-elevation, super-steep, limestone-rich sites in Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé and Pouilly-Fuissé. The Mâcon may still be nowhere near as famous as the legendary terroirs of the Côte de Beaune, yet Frantz and Caroline treat their vineyards with with the love and dedication typically reserved for the most hallowed of Grand Crus. Fruit is hand-harvested, fermented naturally, and aged on the full lees in older Burgundy barrels of various sizes.

The wines are all about precision, with an elegant kiss of reduction, crunchy white fruit, and pure mineral focus. They’re vibrant, energetic and absolutely delicious. The quality is outrageously high, and the prices are still refreshingly friendly.
