Single-vineyard Gaja that has already done its waiting. Sorì Tildìn comes from the family's holding on the Roncagliette ridge, which we count among the very best crus in Barbaresco. Most bottles from sites like this get opened far too young. This 2001 has had more than two decades in bottle, so you get to drink it the way it was built to be drunk. You'll see "Langhe" on the label where you might expect "Barbaresco," but it's the same hillside either way. For anyone who has wondered what all the fuss about Gaja is, a mature bottle from one of its top sites is the clearest answer. Stand it upright for a day, decant it gently off any sediment, and give it time in the glass.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2001 Sorì Tildìn is stellar. It shows the typical Tildìn pointedness, with gorgeous delineation throughout. The fruit remains fabulously rich and vibrant from start to finish. This is a very refined showing from Angelo Gaja. The 2001 is still quite young and appears to have a bright future." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

95 points

"This is pure fruit. Aromas of raspberries, cherries and blackberries jump from the glass. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Shows wonderful finesse and class."

Wine Enthusiast

95 points

"Filled with intoxicating perfume reminiscent of dried spices, fine leather, exotic woods, then delivers bold black cherry, plum and Asian spice flavors tightly wrapped in a velvety blanket of tannin. Long and richly chewy on the finish, yet minerally as well."

More about Gaja

The undisputed king of Barbaresco. Angelo Gaja revolutionized Italian winemaking—techniques that seemed radical at the time are now standard. Founded in 1859, now running 100+ hectares across Barbaresco, Barolo, Montalcino, and Bolgheri. Elegant, age-worthy, impeccable. This is what happens when obsession meets resources.

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; beef braised in Nebbiolo; roast pheasant or guinea hen with porcini; aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic top-site Barbaresco Nebbiolo: red cherry, violet and liquorice, plus the tar, dried herbs and truffle-like earthiness that Nebbiolo typically develops with age. Fine-grained tannins and lively acidity frame a structured, medium-bodied palate. As the wine ages the tannins usually soften, leading to a long, savoury, dry finish.
