Star of Eger, in a bottle. Egri Csillag is the white answer to the more famous red Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) — by regulation a blend of at least four varieties with native grapes forming the majority. Gál Tibor's 2025 weaves Hárslevelű (30%) and Olaszrizling (20%) with Viognier (20%), Szürkebarát, Pinot Blanc, and Tramini, fermented and aged in stainless steel for maximum lift and clarity. The winery was founded in 1993 by the late Tibor Gál Sr. — the Hungarian winemaker who served as chief winemaker at Tuscany's Ornellaia from 1989 to 1998 before returning home to Eger. His son, Tibor Gál Jr., now runs the estate with the same quiet ambition. Fresh, gulpable, dinner-friendly.

More about Gal Tibor

Few Hungarian estates have a better story: Gál Tibor was founded in Eger, in northeastern Hungary, by a winemaker who was also making one of Tuscany's most famous wines, and it is now run by his son.

Tibor Gál Sr. grew up in a family with half a hectare of vines and went on to rise from cellar hand to chief winemaker at Ornellaia in Tuscany. In 1993 he came home to Eger and founded his own winery, in partnership with Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta of Sassicaia and the German importer Burkard Bovensiepen. He was killed in a car accident in South Africa in 2005, while working on a new winery project there. His son, Tibor Gál Jr., now runs the estate, with a stated philosophy inherited from his father: "The only bad decision is the mediocre."

The family farms around 40 hectares across several Eger sites, including Síkhegy and Pajados, and describes itself as on the way to organic viticulture. The range covers the region's two signature blends, the red Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) and the white Egri Csillag (Star of Eger), alongside varietal Kékfrankos and Kadarka. The style is fresh and precise rather than heavy: bright, food-friendly Hungarian wine with a Tuscan-trained sense of polish.
