Gatinois, Champagne Brut Rose Grand Cru, NV

The color in this Grand Cru rosé comes from a still red Aÿ Pinot Noir that the Gatinois family makes in small quantities, and only in very sunny years, from the oldest parcels on the estate (a small block of roughly 70-year-old vines). That red goes into the estate's white base wines, mostly Pinot Noir with a little Chardonnay, all of it from Aÿ Grand Cru. The result is a rosé with real weight that drinks more like serious red-fruited Champagne than a pretty aperitif. Twelfth-generation Louis Gatinois, a geologist who took over in 2010, still sells part of the crop to Bollinger, which tells you what the neighbors think of this fruit. He bottles more under the family label every year, but at about 3,300 cases total there still isn't much to go around. If you think of rosé Champagne as charming but slight, this bottle will change your mind.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is another fine non-vintage offering in this range from Gatinois. Pinot Noir is once again very much center stage. Wild cherry, spice, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and game fill out the layers. The Brut Rosé can be enjoyed on its own, but I see it more as a food wine, given its strong Pinot inflections. Citrus, spice and floral notes add an exotic flourish. This release is 90% Pinot Noir (including 7% still red wine) and 10% Chardonnay, based on 2020." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Hints of slivered almond and pastry dough impart a subtle leesy edge to the flavors of poached peach and white cherry fruit, grated ginger and chalk found in this lip-smacking rosé Champagne with a lively bead."

More about Gatinois

The Gatinois family has grown Pinot Noir on the grand cru hillsides of Aÿ for more than four centuries. Louis Gatinois, the twelfth generation and a trained geologist, took charge in 2010. The family has traditionally sold part of the harvest to big houses like Bollinger, but now keeps more of its fruit for its own label each year. Seven hectares, six of them Pinot Noir, and only about 3,300 cases a year. Small, serious, old-soul Champagne.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
