Gianni Brunelli’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 blends fruit from two estate sites: high-elevation Podernovone and lower-lying Le Chiuse di Sotto, each bringing distinct character. Fermented traditionally and aged 34 months in large Slavonian oak casks, it reflects both structure and finesse.

The 2019 vintage is powerful yet poised—dark cherry, mint, and spice layered over firm tannins and vibrant acidity. A deeply classic Riserva with long aging potential and precise, elegant depth.

Antonio Galloni

98 points

"Fragrant and loaded with finesse, the stunning Gianni Brunelli 2019 Brunello Riserva mesmerizes with its intense aromas of camphor, purple flower, wild berry, underbrush, cedar and dark exotic spice. Full-bodied and showing restrained elegance, the vibrant, savory palate features juicy Morello cherry, wild raspberry, star anise and spiced orange zest set against firm, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it vibrant and balanced. It's still youthfully austere at this stage so give it time to fully develop even more complexity." —Vinous

"Lustrous mid ruby. Brooding, deep raspberry nose with earthy mineral and exotic spice touches. Racy acidity and fragrant raspberry fruit with a lightness of touch that comes as a complete surprise after the nose. Elegant, finely ground tannins. In an unsettled state so a little more patience is needed."

More about Gianni Brunelli

Gianni Brunelli and his wife Laura took over Le Chiuse di Sotto in Montalcino in 1987. When Gianni passed unexpectedly in 2008, Laura continued his vision. Their wines are made from 100% Sangiovese from two sites, full-bodied and complex, proof that Montalcino holds jewels beyond the obvious names. These are honest, elegant, and real.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby color with aromas of cherry, plum, earth, and leather. Full body with powerful tannins, dark fruit and herbal flavors, and a long, complex finish.

10 years ago Brunello was a highly sought-after wine. Wine lovers couldn't get enough of it. But now, many wine-peeps seem to shy away.

Why? Brunello went through scandal and produced wines that are too opulent and overdone for America's evolving tastes.

And yet, the handful of exceptions continue to make some of the most profound, age-worthy and beautiful wines that we know. Gianni Brunelli is one of them. We've opened up 10-12 year-old examples for the hardest core fans of Northern Rhone, Burgundy and Piedmont, and they were shocked to discover how lovely, honest and elegant real Brunello can be.

Partly, it's the style. Laura Brunelli -- who took over for her husband when he passed in 2008 -- really is one of a very small handful of producers that have maintained honesty and tradition throughout Brunello-gate. There is nothing but Slavonian casks at this estate, and certainly no Cabernet! Farming is organic and conducted with dedication and passion.

One other trick to Brunelli's magic is blending, she has two sites that are very different. One produces a very aromatic Sangiovese; the other a grape with more structure and depth. Blend these together and you get Sangiovese heaven.
