Speyside's biggest name goes all in on American oak. This one spends its fourteen years in ex-bourbon barrels and then takes a finishing turn in new charred American oak — a move that pushes it hard toward vanilla, toffee and baking spice. Underneath all that sweetness it's still recognizably Glenfiddich: orchard fruit, honey, a clean malty core, no smoke. The result is a single malt with a bourbon drinker's handshake, which is exactly who it was built for. Drink it neat with a splash of water, or put it to work in an unusually good Old Fashioned.

More about Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich is widely credited with turning single malt into a category of its own. From 1963 it promoted single malt abroad as a premium whisky, at a time when the world drank Scotch almost entirely as blends.

William Grant built the distillery in 1886 in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, and the first spirit ran from its stills on Christmas Day 1887. It is still owned by his descendants at William Grant & Sons, now in their fifth generation, and still draws its water from the nearby Robbie Dhu spring. The name is Gaelic for 'valley of the deer', hence the stag on every bottle.

The house style is unpeated and approachable: orchard fruit, honey and a clean malty core. The 12 Year Old is the benchmark, while bottlings such as the 14 Year Old Bourbon Barrel Reserve and various cask finishes show how much the spirit can shift with different wood.
