A mature Serralunga Barolo from a grower most people still haven't heard of — and that's largely his own doing. Guido Porro, fourth generation on an estate handed father to son, works his steep parcels quietly and traditionally: natural yeasts, three weeks on the skins, three years in Slavonian oak botti, about 15,000 bottles from 4.5 hectares. Lazzairasco is one of his two original bottlings, a monopole of very old vines sitting low on the Lazzarito slope with full south and southeast exposure and shelter from the wind, on the poor, limestone-rich marl that gives Serralunga its especially potent, structured Nebbiolo. That combination gives the powerful side of his range, a wine built to evolve over ten to twenty years. An unusually honest way to taste what classical Serralunga becomes with time.

Antonio Galloni

"Porro's 2006 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco possesses a touch more density and structure than the S. Caterina. Freshly cut flowers, tar and new leather develop in the glass, adding layers of complexity to the beautifully articulated fruit. The Lazzairasco is a serious Barolo that needs time but it is shaping up as one of the hidden gems of the vintage. It is a fabulous effort from Porro." —Antonio Galloni

"Serralunga d'Alba. Very pale ruby, watery orange rim. Slightly medicinal and very closed. Lovely lightness of touch and sweet crunchiness on the finish." —Walter Speller

"Compared to the estate's S. Caterina expression of Barolo, the Lazzairasco cru delivers higher intensity in terms of its spice and vanilla tones. The wine is young, well structured, lively and fresh with a very elegant mouthfeel."

More about Guido Porro

Under the radar, decidedly traditional—that's Guido Porro, a fourth-generation grower in Serralunga d'Alba who makes Barolo the old-fashioned way. Natural yeasts, three weeks on the skins, three years in Slavonian oak, 15,000 bottles from 4.5 hectares. His deeply expressive single-vineyard Barolos (Vigna Lazzairasco, Vigna S. Caterina) offer exceptional quality and an even rarer thing: an insider tip.
