Guido Porro is one of the great under-the-radar traditionalists of Serralunga d'Alba, a grower who flies below the radar largely by choice, rarely accepting visitors or sending samples to the press. His Barolos are deeply expressive and built in the muscular, structured Serralunga mold. Lazzairasco (also spelled Lazzarito-area) is one of his core single-vineyard crus, and 2010 was a benchmark classic Barolo vintage, fresh, firmly structured and built for the long haul. This is now entering a lovely drinking window but has many years ahead.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Aromatically beguiling and deceptively medium in body, the 2010 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco is constantly changing in the glass. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, menthol, tobacco and licorice are some of the many notes that inform this dark, mysterious Barolo. Today, the 2010 remains firm, unyielding and classically austere in the best sense of the term. Readers who like traditionally made Barolo will adore the 2010." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"Guido Porro's 2010 Barolo V. Lazzairasco shows a plump and juicy personality that is characteristic of Serralunga d'Alba. The wine exhibits depth and persistence with generous tones of barbecue smoke, spice and dark fruit. Tertiary aromas of tar and licorice give the wine an extra sense of kick and energy. If you enjoy a full and more generous style of Barolo, this wine is for you. There's a touch of tangy clove or toasted cardamom on the close." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Pale ruby. Sweet, high-toned. Actually rather gentler than most. A real charmer. Candied rose petals with so much fruit that the tannins are almost hidden. Dramatic and charming."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"Bright aromas including wild cherry, red rose, white pepper and clove lead the nose on this structured but refined Barolo. Succulent morello and black cherry, raspberry, mint, sage and black pepper seamlessly intertwine on the palate alongside exhilarating acidity and firm tannins. It promises great aging potential and complexity further down the road." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Guido Porro

Under the radar, decidedly traditional—that's Guido Porro, a fourth-generation grower in Serralunga d'Alba who makes Barolo the old-fashioned way. Natural yeasts, three weeks on the skins, three years in Slavonian oak, 15,000 bottles from 4.5 hectares. His deeply expressive single-vineyard Barolos (Vigna Lazzairasco, Vigna S. Caterina) offer exceptional quality and an even rarer thing: an insider tip.

Tasting Profile

Classic Serralunga Nebbiolo from a great year: red cherry, tar, rose and earth, firm but refined tannins, bright acidity. Maturing, will keep a decade-plus.
