If Rothenberg is Gunderloch's muscle and Hipping its perfume, Pettenthal is the tightrope walker. This steep Nierstein grand cru sits on the same iron-red slate of the Roter Hang, but the soil here is finer and more broken-up, less geologically compressed than at neighboring Rothenberg. The wine follows the rock: more filigreed, more tense, all energy and mineral drive rather than sheer power. Johannes Hasselbach farms it organically and ferments spontaneously to total dryness, chasing that crushed-slate, saline finesse the site is known for. A grand cru for people who love their Riesling nervy and precise.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"The 2024 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs begins with a slight smokiness that proceeds to marry into the creamy juiciness that characterizes the palate. A touch of petrichor adds extra verve, bringing that lovely red apple-tinged savor to the fore. This is power and grace in equal measure. It has drive and fill but also contour, moving ahead with determination and energy. This is salty with a deliciously zesty, textural footprint." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2024 Nierstein Riesling Pettenthal GG shows a radiant lemon color and opens with a bright, fresh and lemony bouquet with notes of crushed slate, salt, woodruff and lush yellow stone fruits. Very elegant and charming compared to the Nackenheim crus, this is a dense, round and textural Riesling with delicate acidity and a long, mouthwatering, saline and finely grippy finish. It's not as intense and complex as the Rothenberg but full of energy, finesse and mineral-driven tension. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in September 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over this Rheinhessen stalwart in 2016 and immediately started making them drier, more mineral, lower in alcohol. That's the move. The Rothenberg vineyard—which they own sixty-five percent of—produces some of Germany's finest Riesling: structured, age-worthy, full of yellow fruit and the kind of acidity that makes food sing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
