What is this wine?
Gunderloch, based in Nackenheim in Germany’s Rheinhessen, is one of the region’s benchmark estates for Riesling. The estate’s prime holdings include the famous Rothenberg vineyard, known for its striking red slate (roter schiefer) soils. This bottling, Vom Roter Schiefer, is a dry Riesling sourced from those same vineyards, designed to showcase the mineral intensity and precision of red slate terroir.

Why get this wine?
Few Rieslings communicate terroir as vividly as those from Rothenberg’s red slate. Gunderloch is renowned for crafting wines of clarity and finesse, and Vom Roter Schiefer delivers a “baby Grosses Gewächs” experience at a fraction of the price. It’s both an ideal introduction to top Rheinhessen Riesling and a rewarding bottle for enthusiasts.

What does this wine taste like?
Focused and dry, with lime, green apple, and white peach framed by herbal notes and a smoky, slate-driven minerality. Crisp acidity keeps it taut and refreshing, with a long, stony finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Delicious now for its bright energy, but it will age gracefully for 5–8 years. Perfect with seafood, sushi, goat cheese, or lightly spiced dishes.

"The 2024 Riesling vom Roten Schiefer was picked in the entirety of the Red Slope, across altitudes and parcels. Some whole berries were added to the ferment for texture. Immediacy defines the nose. All is present right away: florality, fruitiness and almost a sense of apple candy. It has ripeness, smoothness and flow on the bone-dry palate. This is quite a mouthful and it pushes all the buttons: freshness and fill are all present here. (Bone-dry)" —Anne Krebiehl

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
