Old-vine, off-dry Kabinett from the Ockfener Bockstein on the Saar, and the kind of bottle that makes a quiet case for German Riesling as one of the best deals in the shop. The vines grow in grey slate with some quartz, and the Alte Reben on the label is the Webers' own word that these are old vines. Erich Weber and his son Johannes run Hofgut Falkenstein from Konz-Niedermennig, and they farm about as old-school as it gets. They use no herbicides and no artificial fertilizer (cow dung does that job), and they keep yields low by leaving just one flat cane on each vine. Most of the wines are bottled cask by cask. The house makes everything from bone-dry to frankly fruity Saar wines, and this one sits on the gently sweet side, which makes it an easy bottle to love with dinner.

More about Hofgut Falkenstein

The Webers bought this Saar estate in 1981 and decided to do everything in barrel—fermentation, elevage, everything. No tanks at all. Each Fuder gets bottled separately, a restoration of old-time practice that lets you taste the micro-variations between casks from the same site. Minimal intervention since 2021-certified organic; this is Mosel winemaking as philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green papaya salad or a mild green curry, Sichuan dan dan noodles, smoked trout with horseradish cream, pork schnitzel with apple, or a plate of prosciutto and melon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saar Kabinett profile: green apple, lime and white peach over a smoky, slaty mineral streak from the grey slate soils. A gentle touch of sweetness is kept in check by the Saar's racy, bright acidity. The palate is light to medium in body and finishes juicy, fresh and clean rather than sugary.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
