Hofgut Falkenstein, Riesling Spätlese AP #5 Forster, 2024

This is one cask of Saar Riesling: a Spätlese from a single 1,000-liter Fuder, bottled on its own and named "Forster" after the man who once owned its parcel. Erich Weber and his son Johannes bottle cask by cask rather than blending, and the AP number on the label tells you exactly which barrel you're drinking. Their Euchariusberg holding is one unbroken block on the hill's prime slope. Erich bought into the Euchariusberg in 1979. The site was hardly a new discovery: in the early 1800s it was listed as "Kruschock," the only planted vineyard on that hill or the hills around it. Fermentation is with native yeast, with no chaptalization and no de-acidification. In 2024 a severe April frost cut yields to historic lows, but the fruit that survived was very fine, with lively acidity. For anyone who loves classic Mosel Spätlese, a single-cask bottling like this gets you about as close to the source as you can get.

More about Hofgut Falkenstein

Hofgut Falkenstein is a family affair in the Saar valley, where Erich Weber took on the restoration of a historic estate and its vineyards in the 1980s and his son Johannes now works the cellar. Grapes from each small parcel ferment with native yeasts in their own 1,000 liter fuder, and each cask is bottled separately as its own numbered batch, an old-time practice that lets you taste the subtle differences between barrels from the same site, from Krettnacher Euchariusberg to Niedermenniger Sonnenberg. Mosel winemaking as philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green papaya salad, Sichuan dan dan noodles, pork belly bao with pickled cucumber, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a wedge of Roquefort.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saar Spätlese profile: green apple, white peach and lime, with a stony, slate-driven minerality. The off-dry sweetness is kept in check by the Saar's racy, high-toned acidity, and fermentation with native yeast in large old casks typically adds a little texture but no oak flavour. Light in body, it finishes juicy and long.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
