Schioppettino is Friuli's great peppery red, and the Zanussos make one of the most delicate versions going — a wine they'll happily compare to Pinot Noir, and not unreasonably. The fruit comes from a single south-east facing slope in Prepotto, in the Province of Udine, planted on ponca, the marl-and-sandstone marine soil that gives Friuli's wines their texture and nervy acidity; farming is organic. Mario Zanusso runs the vineyards and the cellar, and across the range the grapes are pressed gently so as not to over-extract, with stainless steel and concrete doing the elevage — nothing to muffle the variety's white-pepper signature. This is a red built on balance and slenderness rather than power, which is increasingly the rarer thing. Ferdinando Zanusso spent forty years living and working in Africa before returning to his wife's hometown of Corno di Rosazzo to found I Clivi in the mid-1990s; his son joined shortly after.

Perfect Pairings

Prosciutto di San Daniele with figs, frico (the Friulian cheese-and-potato cake), roast guinea hen with herbs, mushroom risotto, sausage with polenta, or a plate of speck and pickled vegetables. Lightly chilled, it also handles grilled salmon and tuna.

Tasting Profile

Bright ruby and fairly translucent. Cherry and strawberry fruit with a fine white-pepper spice and a touch of licorice. Medium-bodied and slender rather than powerful, with prominent, refreshing acidity and delicate, fine-grained tannins.
