Traditionally made single-vineyard Barolo from Monforte d'Alba with more than fifteen years since the vintage, so the waiting has been done for you. The Gavarini Chiniera vineyard faces south at 350 to 400 meters on moderately loose, slightly sandy limestone soil, and the Grasso family has bottled it as its own Barolo since 1978. The 2008 was fermented in stainless steel and aged in large Slavonian oak. That's the classic Piedmont approach, and it lets the vineyard come through instead of the wood. Elio Grasso has a good story of his own: he left a bank job in Turin to come home to Monforte, and he was the first in his family to make wine from the grapes his predecessors had sold off in bulk. He now runs the estate with his family, including Gianluca, and the family still uses only grapes from its own vineyards. Decant it and give it some time in the glass.

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo with polenta; tajarin with butter and sage, or with shaved white truffle if you can get it; roast rabbit with rosemary; porcini risotto; aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo profile: red cherry, violets and tar, with dried herbs, earth and leather as mature Nebbiolo develops. Ageing in large Slavonian oak keeps the wood in the background so the fruit and site show through. It's firm and structured, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins and a long, savoury, dry finish.
