Lots of tension here that will soften with age or pair nicely with richer foods — lobster, creamy cheeses, roast chicken. We love the mineral intensity, lushness on the palate, and elegant structure.

The fruit comes from both Paulo's vineyards on the southern side of the mountain in São Mateus and from old vines along the western coast in Crioção Velha. It is fermented and aged “sur lies” for about two years in small horizontal tanks.

More about Insula Vinus

Paulo Machado is a Pico Island native and a co-founder, with António Maçanita, of the Azores Wine Company. He planted vineyards in São Mateus that fed many of AWC's wines, and as that project grew he began bottling under his own label, Insula. The wines come from the volcanic southern slopes of Mount Pico: varietal Verdelho and Arinto dos Açores, plus Chão de Lava, a field blend of mostly those two with other native grapes. Island wines with island conviction: pure, saline, alive.
