Drouhin's signature single-vineyard — the historic flagship of the house. The Drouhin parcel at Clos des Mouches is the estate's largest holding at 14 hectares, planted half to Pinot Noir and half to Chardonnay, sitting at the southern end of the Beaune appellation right against the Pommard border. It was one of the first vineyards acquired by Maurice Drouhin in the 1920s — assembled from 41 different parcels across 8 owners — and both bottlings have achieved near-mythical status for the house. Joseph Drouhin has been family-owned since 1880, with organic farming begun in the late 1980s/early 1990s and full organic certification achieved later, with biodynamic practices instituted later. 2020 was a warm but balanced Burgundy vintage that gave wines of remarkable concentration alongside lift; this is drinking well young with the structure to evolve for a decade-plus.

"A slightly earthier nose reflects ripe and beautifully layered aromas of black cherry, cassis and a plethora of floral nuances, especially violet. The round, delicious and almost tender medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive texture before culminating in a youthfully austere, beautifully balanced and hugely long finale. This too could use better depth, but the aging track record of this wine is so good that more will almost certainly develop."

"The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru, which comes from deeper soils than the Beaune Grèves, has a mixture of red and black fruit and is a touch more expressive with a discrete marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, very layered with a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. This is one of the finest Clos des Mouches that I have tasted." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"One of the highlights of the range is the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine), a nicely balanced cuvée that wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, raspberries, orange rind, loamy soil and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and elegant, with ripe tannins, lively acids and a saline finish, it will offer a broad drinking window." —William Kelley

Wine Spectator

"This elegant version is packed with ripe black cherry, plum, sandalwood, cedar and spice flavors. Its beam of acidity keeps everything focused as mineral and leafy vegetal notes emerge. Shows fine balance, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, licorice and spice."

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
