Joseph Roty is one of the great old traditional names of Gevrey-Chambertin, and we snap up the family's Marsannays whenever we find them, because they over-deliver and age beautifully. This village Marsannay comes from the northern end of the Cote d'Or, where east-facing slopes sit over limestone soils. The 2014 was a classic, fresh vintage for red Burgundy, and at a decade old this is drinking in a lovely spot, mature but still lively. A great way to taste a serious Gevrey address without the Grand Cru price. Drink now over the next few years.

Antonio Galloni

87 points

"Medium red. Aromas of cherry, licorice and flowers. Flavors of redcurrant, iron and spices are supported by a firm spine of acidity and tannins. Still, this saline, earthy wine should evolve fairly quickly." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

90 points

"A blend of several lieux-dits intended as a representation of the appellation, the 2014 Marsannay Villages has a generous nose with a touch of leather infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced with the new oak (30% to 40%) needing more time to be fully subsumed. But there is more than enough fruit to soak that up with time and as such, I would afford it a couple of years once in bottle." —Neal Martin

Wine Spectator

90 points

"A juicy, smoky version, whose cherry and berry flavors ride a chalky line of tannins and vivid acidity. There's a hard edge, making the finish austere now, yet showing plenty of fruit for balance. Drink now through 2022."

More about Joseph Roty

Joseph Roty's family has been making wine since 1710, and today his sons Philippe and Pierre-Jean steward one of Burgundy's most coveted collections of old vines. Late picking, zero destemming, low-temperature fermentation—every choice is about extracting maximum complexity from ancient fruit. These are profound, age-worthy reds.
