Cantemerle is a Fifth Growth in the southern Haut-Medoc, prized for the elegance its deep gravel soils bring to Cabernet. Les Allees de Cantemerle is the estate's second wine, drawn largely from younger vines and made in the same spirit but ready to drink years sooner. The 2018 is a generous, ripe vintage, offering cassis, cedar, and graphite over polished tannins. This is a half-bottle in ex-negociant condition, drinking well now and ideal for a Bordeaux fix without the wait.

More about Les Allees de Cantemerle

Les Allées de Cantemerle is the second wine of Château Cantemerle, a Haut-Médoc estate just south of Margaux whose wines are known for their perfume and finesse. It's made to be opened within a few years of the vintage, which makes it one of the easier ways into classic Médoc claret.

Cantemerle is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with records going back to the 12th century. The Villeneuve-Durfort family held it for centuries, the Dubos family from 1892, and since 1981 it has belonged to SMABTP, a French mutual insurance group that rebuilt the cellars and replanted much of the vineyard. The vines, around 90 hectares in Macau with a few in neighboring Ludon, grow on sand and gravel. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot alongside.

The Allées is made by the same team in the same cellar, where wooden and cement vats still work alongside steel. Expect a Cabernet-led blend in a lighter, more forward frame than Cantemerle itself: red and black fruit, a gravelly edge and supple tannins. Drink it young, or give the better vintages a few more years.
