Luciano Sandrone is a Barolo legend, but this Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from one of Piedmont's most thrilling vineyards: Valmaggiore, a steep sandy amphitheater in the Roero that's so vertical (45 degrees in spots) every task has to be done by hand. Those deep, well-drained sands give Nebbiolo a perfumed, silky, almost weightless expression, all aroma and lift rather than brute power. This is a Nebbiolo with serious pedigree from a great producer, now with bottle age that's softened its edges. The 2010 was an outstanding Piedmont vintage, and this is drinking beautifully right now.
