Luis Seabra named this wine Delito, Spanish for "crime." The joke is that it's his "second offense": he worked in Ribeira Sacra earlier in his career, and Delito is his return. For a winemaker so closely tied to the Douro, crossing into Galicia is a fun detour. Here the vines grow on steep terraces of mostly slate and granite above the Sil River, in one of Spain's most dramatic wine landscapes. The fruit comes from a single vineyard planted mainly to old-vine Mencía, and that's very much Seabra. He seeks out old vines because he believes they handle harsh conditions better, and when he founded his own winery in 2013 he launched his 'Cru' series around site rather than grape. He worked as a soil researcher in Vinho Verde, so the focus on rock is no accident. Ribeira Sacra's mix of Atlantic and inland influence brings warm days, cool nights and a long growing season. If you love his Portuguese reds, this is the same mind at work on the other side of the border.

Grilled lamb chops, roast pork loin, seared duck breast, roast chicken with herbs, wild mushroom risotto or sautéed mushrooms on toast, Spanish charcuterie, Galician-style grilled octopus with paprika, and semi-aged sheep's milk cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Ribeira Sacra Mencía profile: red cherry, raspberry and dark plum lifted by violets, black pepper and a stony, slate-driven minerality. Typically medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and fine, light tannins, it finishes dry and savoury. Think of a Cru Beaujolais with more spice and grip.
