Most people drink Mâcon young, which makes a 2004 single-vineyard bottling from Dominique Lafon a real curiosity: a chance to see what the Mâconnais's most ambitious project of its era looks like with two decades behind it. Lafon was the first Côte d'Or producer to invest in the Mâconnais. He founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999 and converted its vineyards to biodynamics over the next few years, so this bottle comes from the domaine's very first chapter, before his longtime apprentice Caroline Gon became head winemaker in 2006. Clos du Four is a 1.4-hectare vineyard in Milly-Lamartine. It sits mid-slope, facing east at 250 metres, with vines planted between 1982 and 1985. Its deep soil holds more clay than most of the domaine's other Milly parcels, mixed with small limestone rocks from the bedrock, and that's the kind of footing that gives Chardonnay extra weight and depth. Lafon's approach here was always larger, neutral wood rather than new oak, which keeps the focus on the site. If you're a Burgundy lover curious how far a Mâcon can go, this is a fascinating bottle to open.

"Produced from a vineyard that is locally famous for its capacity to fully ripen fruit (Lafon owns half of it), the outstanding 2004 Macon-Milly-Lamartine Clos du Four proudly boasts a nose of spices, minerals, and hints of dried honey. It is immensely concentrated, rich, and ample yet retains wonderful purity, focus, and a crystalline characteristic that led me to pen “Wow!” in my notebook. Armed with impressive depth of fruit, this spicy, mineral liqueur-flavored wine also sports a long, fruit-packed finish. To give readers a perspective of where this wine’s quality stands, after we had tasted it and were preparing to begin visiting the wines from his family’s world-famous Cote de Beaune estate, Dominique Lafon said, “It really won’t make me look good if you give the Clos du Four a better score than my Meursault.” Drink it over the next 3-4 years." —Pierre Rovani

"Tense. Nervy. Very, very aristocratic. It doesn’t have the weight of a Côte d’Or; but otherwise it’s very similar in terms of build." —Jancis Robinson MW

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, veal blanquette, sautéed wild mushrooms on toast, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fuller, rounder take on Mâcon Chardonnay: ripe yellow apple, pear and lemon, with clay-rich soil adding weight and limestone keeping a fresh, chalky edge. Ageing in large neutral casks typically adds texture rather than obvious oak flavour, so think closer to a Côte d'Or village white than a simple, crisp Mâcon, with a dry, savoury finish.
