The new face of Austrian Blaufrankisch is fresh, mineral, and unapologetically site-specific - and Markus Altenburger is one of its clearest voices. From Jois on the Leithaberg, where his family has farmed for over 500 years, Markus took over and converted everything to organic after joining the estate in 2006. Vom Kalk - "from the limestone" - is his calling card: a blend of seven parcels on calcareous soils, vines up to 40 years old, hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously as whole berries, and aged nine months in old oak. The result is Blaufrankisch in its cool, peppery, transparent register - closer in spirit to good cru Beaujolais or a savory Pinot than to anything heavy or extracted.
