Domaine du Coulet is named after Le Coulet, a steeply terraced, east-facing lieu-dit at 300 meters elevation, worked only by horse, mule, or hand. Billes Noires is sourced from three parcels with vines planted in 1920, 1956, and 1981 respectively.
Deep decomposed granite gives this wine exceptional concentration—all at just 12% alcohol—as does the 15 hl/ha yield (one-third the appellation's maximum) and an intense phenolic grip. This necessitates three years of extended maturation before release.
It's a psychedelic Syrah: dripping inky blood and meat musk, perfumed by wild flowers and black-and-red pepper flakes, stark cherry and plum fruit round out the wine, but play second fiddle to the taut structure. Even though it begs for more cellar time, it's an absolute wonder to drink at this stage—and will age gracefully for 10, 20 years or more.
