Michel Gros is a modest, unassuming man despite being the 6th-generation vigneron of a great Vosne-Romanee family. This village Chambolle-Musigny shows the perfumed, delicate, gracious side of the Cote de Nuits that the appellation is famous for. The 2012 was a small but high-quality vintage, and at over a decade old this is drinking in a mature, savory window. A lovely chance to taste a serious Burgundy address at the village level. Decant gently and enjoy now over the next few years.

"Once again there is enough wood to notice but not so much as to seriously detract from the appreciation of the discreetly spicy mix of plum liqueur and red currant scents. There is a very rich, even succulent quality to the middle weight flavors that possess a velvety mouth feel due to the enveloping texture of the copious dry extract. This isn't especially elegant but there is impeccably good balance and for those who enjoy a seductive Chambolle rather than one that is more mineral-driven, then this would be an excellent choice."

"The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Village is a blend of four parcels, the most important in Les Argillieres, just a stone’s through from Musigny. It has a refined, languid bouquet at first; offering crushed strawberry, cranberry and mineral scents that take a few minutes to coalesce in the glass. The palate has a smooth silky entry with well-judged acidity and a lovely succulent, spice tinged finish that is very composed and focused. This is another very fine wine from Michel Gros." —Neal Martin

More about Michel Gros

Six generations of Vosne-Romanée skill distilled into entry-level magic. Michel Gros' village wines deliver the freshness and minerality that make you fall in love with Burgundy before spending serious money. The domaine has held the monopoly on Clos des Réas since 1860—one of Burgundy's great-estate benchmarks—but it's the approachable bottlings that let everyone in on the secret: Gros knows how to make Pinot sing.
