Chenin Blanc is South Africa's calling card, but Marelise Niemann's twist is the Verdelho she blends into it — "Chenin Blanc without Verdelho is like dancing without music," she says, crediting the Verdelho with an extra turn of freshness, energy and rhythm. The Chenin comes from dryland-farmed bush vines in the Paardeberg, in the Swartland, over four decades old; the Verdelho from two cooler sites, one on decomposed granite and clay in the Voor Paardeberg, one on Bokkeveld shale in Bot River. Winemaking is as hands-off as it gets: hand-harvested, whole-bunch basket-pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast in 400L and 225L French oak, full malolactic, ten months on old oak, bottled unfined. That's a lot of care for a wine that asks very little of your wallet. The 2023 growing season had a cool ripening period and small, concentrated berries, and Niemann says the 2023s have tension and energy and will reward cellaring — but this is also just a terrific white to drink with dinner tonight.

Marelise Niemann left her job at another winery to farm Grenache on her own terms. Her Momento project started with two barrels in 2013 and now works Grenache (three varieties), Tinta Barocca, and Chenin-Blanc blends with obsessive care. Small-batch, honest, the kind of South African naturalism that doesn't perform for anyone.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with hay, oatmeal and a wet-stone note from the barrel ferment and lees. Bright, firm acidity keeps it taut rather than rich, and the texture is more savory than fruity. Long, faintly salty finish.
