Marelise Niemann launched Momento in 2013 while still making wine at Beaumont, and Grenache has been at the heart of the project ever since. This bottling comes from bush vines on decomposed granite in the Paardeberg, in South Africa's Swartland — the very first parcel she bought back in 2011, and the wine that defines the Momento style. Hand-harvested, partially whole-cluster, native-yeast fermented, and matured for sixteen months in old foudre and old French oak, it's a Grenache of restraint and lift: red-fruited, savory, and translucent rather than jammy. A South African Grenache that has more in common with the northern Mediterranean than the Cape stereotype.

Marelise Niemann left her job at another winery to farm Grenache on her own terms. Her Momento project started with two barrels in 2013 and now works Grenache (three varieties), Tinta Barocca, and Chenin-Blanc blends with obsessive care. Small-batch, honest, the kind of South African naturalism that doesn't perform for anyone.

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry sauce, herbed lamb chops, mushroom risotto, charcuterie boards, or hard cheeses. Equally happy with a Tuesday-night roast chicken or a serious Sunday lamb shoulder.

Tasting Profile

Translucent ruby. Red cherry, raspberry, dried thyme, crushed stone, and a whisper of orange peel. Medium-bodied, fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a savory, lifted finish. Mediterranean in feel, never heavy or sweet.
