Massolino has been making serious traditional Barolo in Serralunga d'Alba since 1896, and brothers Franco and Roberto continue to draw some of the most quietly classical wines of the commune from their lineup of single crus. Parafada is a south-facing parcel of calcareous marl in Serralunga, and it tends to produce Barolo of dark fruit, deep minerality, and the firm, austere tannin profile that marks the village. The classical, properly structured 2013 vintage suits Parafada to a tee. Twelve years on, the wine is just stepping into its long drinking window, with another decade-plus of evolution ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Barolo Parafada is endowed with a huge core of fruit, as it always is. Powerful, resonant and tannic, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. These 60 year-old vines confer intensity, nuance and pedigree. This is a fabulous showing from the Parafada. Don’t miss it." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2013 Barolo Parafada is a gorgeous wine that needs ample time to complete its promising aging evolution. The quality of fruit is still tight and slightly nervous, although the well-managed tannins show an impressive level of integration even at this early stage. The wine is assembled with tightly fitted building blocks that give it a grounding sense of firmness and stacked layering." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Cherry and cigar box aromas introduce this juicy, linear red. Strawberry, cherry, floral and chalky mineral flavors are persistent and pure as this retreats into a tannic structure. Shows terrific length, so be patient."

Kerin O'Keefe

97 points

"Aromas of new leather, ripe dark berry, vineyard dust and a whiff of smoky flint waft out of the glass along with floral and balsamic notes. The full-bodied palate shows great energy and intensity, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, ripe cranberry, white pepper and clove framed in youthfully assertive, refined tannins and bright acidity. A mineral note wraps up the lingering finish. With time, this will develop even greater complexity. Drink 2023–2053." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Massolino

Massolino's been the north star of Serralunga d'Alba since 1896. Giovanni founded it; his son built the cellar. Today they work with Barolo's most esteemed crus—Vigna Rionda, Parafada, and others—using a blend of old and new that respects tradition without being its slave. This is what happens when a family doesn't mess with what works.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, or a roast of beef with rosemary potatoes. Aged Castelmagno or Bra Duro at the close. The wine wants richness but not heaviness on the plate.

Tasting Profile

Macerated cherry, dried rose, tar, and crushed iron rise from the glass, joined by tobacco and brown spice with air. The palate is firm and finely framed, with the upright tannins that mark good Serralunga and a long, savory finish. Decant well or hold.
