Olga Raffault is one of the most famous names in Chinon, one of France's great Cabernet Franc appellations, and Les Picasses is one of the Loire's finest vineyards, a south-facing slope of clay over limestone tuffeau. The family farms organically, ferments with native yeast, and ages long in foudres, and the result is a wine that can drink on release or cellar for decades. This is the 1989, a remarkable back-vintage bottle from a private cellar with more than three decades of age. At this point it is fully mature, trading fruit for the tertiary, savory, forest-floor complexity that makes aged Cab Franc so beloved. A rare chance to taste what patience does to a great Chinon.

Olga Raffault never actually made wine—she was just the unforgettable owner for many years. Now her granddaughter Sylvie and Sylvie's husband Eric run the 24-hectare estate in the Véron, between the Loire and Vienne rivers, where five generations of Raffaults have worked. 23 hectares of Chinon from Cabernet Franc, just converted to organic, picked by hand, fermented native. The flagship Les Picasses from south-facing slopes speaks in a voice that's elegant and utterly Loire.
