One of the most famous names in Chinon, in one of its greatest vineyards and now beautifully mature. Olga Raffault's Les Picasses is a south-facing slope of clay over limestone tuffeau, and it produces a deeply traditional, ageworthy expression of Cabernet Franc that can drink well for twenty years or more, a rare feat at a reasonable cellar price. The family farms organically with native yeast and long aging in old foudres, letting terroir speak. The 2010 was a classic, structured Loire vintage, and at well over a decade old this wine has reached a savory, complex prime. Drink over the next several years.

"The 2010 Les Picasses, tasted at the winery, is available to buy from the cellar door and is such a great value; I had to find room in my bag to buy a few bottles. It is a ripe and rounded style with Worcestershire sauce and pickled plums on the nose. On the palate, it is soft and mouthfilling with a fine line of mouthwatering acidity and delightful, chalky tannin. The wine has a lovely coating but also has a sense of direction, keeping you salivating. The finish is textured and long with a fragrance reminiscent of tea leaf, tobacco and game. Balanced and long, this had slightly more focus and precision than the charming, seductive 2009, suggesting the 2010 has a longer life ahead. This is an incredible value." —Rebecca Gibb MW

"Picked after a dry vegetation period on the 4th of September, the 2010 Chinon Les Picasses opens with an earthy, fresh but rather thrifty nose of Cab Franc (dark berries) and crushed stones. Pretty pulpy. The palate is silky, fresh and elegant, and the finish is pretty intense, dense, sweet and even slightly juicy, again with earthy notes and firm and slightly drying tannins. This has a more rural character compared to the other vintages I had from Les Picasses." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Olga Raffault

Olga Raffault never actually made wine—she was just the unforgettable owner for many years. Now her granddaughter Sylvie and Sylvie's husband Eric run the 24-hectare estate in the Véron, between the Loire and Vienne rivers, where five generations of Raffaults have worked. 23 hectares of Chinon from Cabernet Franc, just converted to organic, picked by hand, fermented native. The flagship Les Picasses from south-facing slopes speaks in a voice that's elegant and utterly Loire.
