2016 was a knock-out year in Piedmont, and this is Paitin's classic, elegant take on Neive Barbaresco from it. When it was released we said the 2016s would age gracefully for many years. Serraboella is the most famous cru in southern Neive, a long west-facing hill that gets steeper as it bends south, and the family's Barbaresco comes from the steepest, warmest side. Until 1999 these grapes went into the Sori Paitin, which sits between the two plots. One plot, 'd Tourun, is on layered sand and marl and gives the wine its mineral, rough-edged grip. The other, Schiena d'Ernestin, is more sheltered and sits on marly limestone, and it brings the finesse. Luca Pasquero-Elia, whose family has farmed here since 1796, compares these wines to Montestefano, one of Barbaresco's most Barolo-like crus, and Neive is known for making the zone's more powerful wines. The farming is organic and the cellar work is old-school: long macerations, then ageing in big Austrian oak casks. Save it for a proper dinner, not the cocktail hour.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is bright, perfumed and very nicely lifted, with an attractive interplay of floral aromatics and textural depth. Mint, pine, kirsch, dried flowers and sweet tobacco are some of the nuances that emerge. The 2016 is tightly wound and classically austere in style, so it needs time in bottle to unwind, but it has undoubtedly fine potential." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella delivers the same grace and beautiful fragility that you get in the other wines in Paitin's portfolio of new releases. This production of 9,800 bottles shows a slow and steady progression of wild berry, forest floor, blue flower, dried lilac, blood orange and delicate licorice or tar. There's a lot going on in terms of the bouquet, and all that energy is nicely balanced by the wine's lithe body and its natural tannic backbone." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

"A rich version, whose velvety texture carries cherry, plum, menthol and tobacco flavors. Dense and ripe, ending in a cascade of fruit and broad, dusty tannins. Fine balance. Best from 2023 through 2043."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Underbrush, menthol and cracked dill aromas lead the nose. The vigorous palate offers crunchy sour cherry, orange zest and licorice set against assertive, close-grained tannins and racy acidity." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Paitin

Freisa's forgotten strawberry charm revived. For the first time since the 1960s, Paitin is making wine from Freisa—Piedmont's spicy, high-tannin red that tastes of strawberry (its etymological namesake) and autumn spice. Their Langhe Freisa Bonina is generous, perfumed, and a perfect reminder that native grapes tell stories that imports can't.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; agnolotti del plin; brasato al Barbaresco (beef braised in red wine); roast veal with porcini; aged Castelmagno or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic, traditionally made Barbaresco from Neive: red cherry, violet, tar and dried herbs, with a mineral, earthy edge. Medium- to full-bodied and firmly structured, with bright acidity and grippy Nebbiolo tannins that big-cask ageing leaves savoury rather than oaky, finishing long and dry. Think a Barbaresco that leans toward Barolo's power, built to age.
