A serious Serralunga Riserva from a quiet traditionalist most of America doesn't yet know. Palladino, founded in 1974 by Piero Palladino (with his cousin Maurilio) and still family-run, sits in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba and farms a portfolio of southern crus including the small, east-facing San Bernardo MGA. The Riserva is only declared in vintages strong enough to bear the extra years in large Slavonian oak botte, and 2016 — a benchmark classical Piedmont vintage of rare poise — was an obvious yes. The result is austere Serralunga to the core: bitter orange, dried rose, tar, that calcareous-clay grip Serralunga is famous for. Just released after nearly a decade of slow aging, and built to keep evolving for decades more. A textbook example of why Serralunga remains Barolo's most ageworthy commune.

The Palladino 2016 Barolo Riserva San Bernardo is a bit shy upon initial inspection, and this comes as a surprise given the immediate heft and power that is associated with this vineyard site in Serralunga d'Alba. That timid approach repays in kind with added layers of complexity and fine aromas that appear carefully with each swirl of the glass. Tasting Profile

Austere and classical. Bitter orange, dried roses, tar, licorice and macerated cherry over Serralunga's signature calcareous grip. Tannins are dense but polished, the finish savory and savoury-saline. Decant and wait.
