Peay’s 2022 Maritima Chardonnay is their most ocean-influenced bottling, and it shows. Grown just four miles from the Pacific, this wine hums with coastal energy—pure citrus, crushed shells, and cool salinity.

It opens with lemon zest, green apple, and white flowers, wrapped in a sleek frame of vibrant acidity and subtle texture. There’s oak, but it’s whisper-soft—used to shape, not dominate. The result is a Chardonnay with Burgundian bones and Sonoma Coast soul: focused, elegant, and built to evolve.

If you crave restraint and clarity in your white wines, Maritima is the bottle that proves California Chardonnay can be both powerful and poised.

Perfect for: oysters, Dungeness crab, roast chicken, or sipping slowly while the fog rolls in.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Chardonnay Maritima, formerly the Chardonnay Estate, is such a classy wine. Polished and refined, with sublime balance, the 2022 is so elegant. Tangerine oil, white pepper, truffle, mint and baked apple are some of the notes that grace this compelling, nuanced Chardonnay from Peay. This is striking." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2022 Chardonnay Estate Maritimo (formerly known as the Peay Estate Chardonnay), offers well-integrated tones of matchstick and roasted almonds, which complement a core of yellow peach, dried jasmine, beeswax and an exotic note of tangerine oil. The medium-bodied palate balances generous fruit and bright acidity, and it has a long, flavorful finish. It's a touch riper than in other vintages and offers immediate drinking potential." —Erin Brooks

Decanter

"A stunning coastal Chardonnay, the Maritima Estate is a new nomenclature for the Estate Chardonnay. It is evocative of the Amalfi coast, Sicilian lemons, salty air, and white flowers. The palate balances all the generosity of juicy lemons with a tingly mineral character. Gorgeous lemon grilled, fresh mint, and mouthfuls of minerality, crushed slate with stone smoky flint."

Wine Enthusiast

96 points

"The nose of this clean and focused Chardonnay is overflowing with aromas of bright citrus, oyster shell and bouquets of fresh cut white flowers, while the energetic palate vibrates with flavors of lemon pith, green apple, pineapple sage, lemon balm and river stones through a long and intricate finish. Exceptional now, this will flourish with a little time in the cellar." —Tom R. Capo

More about Peay Vineyards

Vanessa Wong left Peter Michael Winery in 2001 to start Peay Vineyards with her husband Nick (and brother Andy handling business). Their 53-acre hilltop vineyard sits in the far northwestern corner of West Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific, at Sea Ranch. 34 acres of Pinot Noir, eight of Syrah, seven of Chardonnay, plus Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. Certified organic, serious about complexity, aging-worthy. Wong's resume (Lafite-Rothschild, Jean Gros, Hirsch) says everything about the level.

Tasting Profile

Coastal California Chardonnay with stone fruit, citrus, and subtle oak aromas. Medium body with pear and mineral flavors, bright acidity, elegant texture, and a clean finish.

The wind-whipped Sonoma Coast is not a particularly hospitable location for growing wine grapes. Temperatures can fluctuate wildly, there is the ever-present threat of mold, due to the humidity, and the sandy soils do not encourage vines to flourish. Yet since 2002, the team behind Peay Vineyards—Nick and Andy Peay, along with winemaker Vanessa Wong—have endeavored to create wines of purity and finesse in this very environment.

But as all three will tell you the AVA Sonoma Coast is huge, and applies to vast areas of Sonoma County that do not share the extremes that are found right near the coast where the cold, deep Pacific ocean and resulting inversion layer contribute to a truly unique micro-climate. In response The Peay's and their nearby neighbors are pushing for a new AVA called "West Sonoma Coast".

It is in this newly proposed AVA that some of the most interesting and terroir specific wines are being made. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate, as they both benefit from the long growing season and temperature fluctuations. But the Peays have also found Syrah to be very well suited to their locale as well . . . which is good since Vanessa, Nick and Andy all enjoy the traditional Northern Rhone wines as much as Burgundy.

The wines at Peay Vineyards are benchmark examples of the excellence that can come from California. They are elegant, unique and intense, thanks in part to the ancient marine soils on which they are grown. The Peays spend as much time as possible working amongst the vines. Because they own (and for Nick and Vanessa live on) the entire property they have become intimately familiar with each vineyard's distinct characteristics and are able to make wines that showcase their special terroir.
