A village Savigny-lès-Beaune from a winemaker whose résumé reads like a list of Burgundy's most coveted cellars, though his own wines are refreshingly free of fuss. Seiichi Saito, a Japanese expat of Chinese origin, studied at the wine school in Beaune. He then worked at Bize, Mugnier, Rousseau and Leflaive before starting Petit-Roy in 2017 from a base in Chorey-lès-Beaune. He owns just 2.1 hectares of regional-appellation vines and fills out the range with grapes bought from friends in what he calls Burgundy's "modest" appellations. That's exactly where the value hides, and Savigny is a textbook case. This is 100% Pinot Noir, and for his reds he favours whole clusters and a light hand on extraction. The goal is bright, pure, mouthwatering Burgundy you open for the pleasure of it, not for the label, which is about as un-stuffy as the Côte de Beaune gets.

"The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Rouge is lovely, bursting with aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's framed by powdery tannins and succulent acids." —William Kelley

More about Petit-Roy

These are unique Burgundies made by a Japanese winemaker with a fresh approach. Before becoming a winemaker, Seiichi was a chef. He sold his restaurant to concentrate on making wine. This is a man who understands flavor and good taste.

Though Seiichi spoke no French, in 2006 he enrolled in the Lycée Viticole in Beaune. In 2008, he moved to Burgundy full-time and worked for several years with Patrick Bize at Domaine Simon Bize, then at J-F Mugnier and Armand Rousseau. He eventually managed to purchase two hectares of vineyards that he farms organically with biodynamic methods. He also purchases grapes from friends who are working in the same spirit.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme and pan juices; duck breast with a cherry sauce; mushroom risotto or wild mushrooms on toast; jambon persillé; yakitori, especially chicken thigh and tsukune with tare; seared salmon with soy and brown butter.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Savigny-lès-Beaune profile: red cherry, raspberry and a touch of earthy, forest-floor spice, lifted by the floral, slightly stemmy freshness that whole clusters bring. Light to medium-bodied, with fine, gentle tannins and bright, mouthwatering acidity, it typically finishes dry, pure and juicy. This is a Burgundy made for drinking young rather than for long cellaring.
