More about Poderi Sanguineto I e II

Dora Forsoni makes Vino Nobile the way it was made before anyone thought to modernize it: Montepulciano's Sangiovese without makeup.

Her father, Federico, bought the farm in 1963. Dora began working the vines beside him in 1968 and took over after his death in 1983, selling the fruit in bulk for years. Then, in 1996, she and her partner Patrizia Castiglioni found an old, unlabeled bottle of Federico's wine, and the following year they began bottling their own. The name is a relic of the property's sharecropping past: the old estate was divided into parcels, and Sanguineto was parcels one and two.

Only a small share of the 50-hectare farm is vineyard. The vines grow at around 300 meters on a northeast-facing slope above the Val di Chiana, in red soils of clay, stones and marine sediment, and they are farmed organically and largely by hand. Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese, is joined by Canaiolo and Mammolo.

Fermentations happen in cement with native yeasts and no temperature control, and nothing is fined or filtered. Dora's motto is one vintage, one wine, three expressions: the same red becomes Rosso after a year in oak, Vino Nobile after two and, in some years, Riserva after three. Expect wines that are earthy, transparent and alive.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

Malvasia Verde/Malvasia Bianco/Biancame/Trebbiano/Grechetto. Organically farmed, hand-harvested estate fruit. The grapes are destemmed and macerated overnight, gently pressed and and co-fermented with native yeasts in glass-lined cement tanks. The wine is aged in steel and then bottled in May after the vintage. Historically, vignaiola Dora Forsoni's father blended the whites into the Vino Nobile to soften the red; after taking over years ago, Dora opted to bottle the white separately and the Vino Nobile as a pure red.
