Carema is one of Italy's most dramatic and obscure Nebbiolo zones, a tiny patch of steep, terraced vineyards clinging to the Alpine slopes where Piedmont meets the Aosta Valley. This grower cooperative, founded in 1960, is the keeper of the flame here, and the Carema Classico (the Etichetta Nera) is their core bottling, mountain Nebbiolo aged in large neutral oak. The high-altitude terroir gives a lighter, more perfumed and savory style than Barolo, with bracing freshness. The 2010 was a classic Piedmont vintage, and at fifteen years it's drinking in a lovely mature window. Decant and enjoy.
