Hofgut Falkenstein, Riesling Kabinett Feinherb AP #11 Meyer Nepal, 2024

If you want to taste one barrel of Mosel Riesling, this is it. Meyer Nepal is a single cask from the Niedermenniger Herrenberg vineyard, bottled on its own and labeled with its AP number, #11. Feinherb means off-dry, and at Kabinett level that makes this an easy bottle to open any night: a touch of sweetness, nothing heavy, and the Herrenberg's grey slate-and-quartz soil underneath. Erich Weber and his son Johannes run the estate. They farm organically with no herbicides and no artificial fertilizer (cow dung does that job). The cellar is just as old-school: grapes are picked by hand and moved by gravity, then fermented with native yeasts and matured on their lees in 1,000-liter casks. Bottling a single cask is the point here. You get one corner of one vineyard rather than a blend, from a family that clearly cares about the difference.

More about Hofgut Falkenstein

The Webers bought this Saar estate in 1981 and decided to do everything in barrel—fermentation, elevage, everything. No tanks at all. Each Fuder gets bottled separately, a restoration of old-time practice that lets you taste the micro-variations between casks from the same site. Minimal intervention since 2021-certified organic; this is Mosel winemaking as philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai larb or green papaya salad, Sichuan dan dan noodles, Vietnamese summer rolls, smoked trout with horseradish cream, glazed ham, or pork schnitzel.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Kabinett feinherb profile: green apple, white peach and lime with a stony, slate-driven minerality, light in body with just a touch of sweetness balanced by bright, mouthwatering acidity. Native-yeast fermentation and time on the lees in large casks typically add a little texture and savoury depth, and the finish is crisp and refreshing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
