This Central Otago Pinot bursts with classic aromas of pomegranate, baking spice, cranberry and exotic tea leaves, and continues on the palate with a cascade of vibrant red fruit balanced by firm acidity. Biodynamically farmed, it's a wonderful example of how great New Zealand Pinot Noir can be.

"Spiced almost like a northern Rhône Syrah, the 2021 Pinot Noir Mature Vine is suave and finely detailed. Low crops and a slightly warmer-than-usual season lend richness and ease. Slick tannins coat the palate and are beautifully handled. With a long and fragrant finish, this is drinking well now." —Rebecca Gibb, MW

"The 2021 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is a representation of the flavor of the estate. The wine spends two winters in barrel and two in bottle prior to release, and as usual, the wine here today expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades. On the palate, the tannins set in in a manner akin to wet chalk. They are silty and fine and tend to settle on the palate and linger long through the finish. I love this wine: the detail and freshness of it and the flavors of pomegranate, crushed shells, raspberry seed and white tea. Yields were very low, and it was a difficult year in terms of the logistical challenges thanks to COVID-19. "I kept it simple this year; there was so much going on in our lives at that time," says Nick Mills. Vines were planted from 1982 to 2000, mostly unirrigated (aside from new vines) and on own roots, and no adjustments were made to the must. This is gorgeous. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam." —Erin Larkin

More about Rippon

Rippon sits on the shores of Lake Wanaka and has some of Central Otago's oldest vines on their own roots, farmed biodynamically without irrigation. Minimal intervention, wild ferments, schist soils full of quartz and mica—these are precise, layered, mineral wines that taste like the landscape. Six varietals, with Pinot Noir as the headline, made by a family that's been farming this property since 1912. This is New Zealand wine without the noise.
