Nothing here follows the Marlborough template. Rippon's Sauvignon Blanc grows on schist gravels at the edge of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, on own-rooted vines planted between 1987 and 1993, dry-farmed and biodynamic. Rolfe 'Tinker' Mills planted the place from the 1970s, having seen similar schist in the Douro, and it became Central Otago's oldest winery; his son Nick, who trained at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti among other addresses, took over in 2003 and converted the farming to certified biodynamics. The 2023 spent three months on its primary lees, half in neutral oak and half in tank, with no additions or adjustments to the must, and finished at 13%. Expect texture and herbal complexity rather than passionfruit and cut grass.

"Rippon's 2023 Sauvignon Blanc has a supple, succulent expression that focuses on richness of texture and curved edges. This has rich fruit aromas reminiscent of mangoes and peaches with lees-derived almond pastry notes making for a rather unusual New Zealand Sauvignon flavor profile. The 2023 has a lovely, well-integrated line of acidity within its gourmet core." —Rebecca Gibb MW

"The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is chalky and grassy, with beeswax, pressed flower, juniper, wind anemone and white pepper. I love the dried hay character here; it makes for a clothy, textural wine of presence and detail. The vines were planted from 1987 to 1993 on own roots and were unirrigated, biodynamically farmed and low-yielding. The wine spent three months on the primary lees, with 50% in barrel (neutral oak) and the balance in tank. It is unsulfured, with no additions or adjustments to the must. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam." —Erin Larkin

More about Rippon

Rippon sits on the shores of Lake Wanaka and has some of Central Otago's oldest vines on their own roots, farmed biodynamically without irrigation. Minimal intervention, wild ferments, schist soils full of quartz and mica—these are precise, layered, mineral wines that taste like the landscape. Six varietals, with Pinot Noir as the headline, made by a family that's been farming this property since 1912. This is New Zealand wine without the noise.
