Les Memoires is Thierry Germain's most profound expression of Saumur-Champigny, drawn from a tiny old-vine parcel and aged slowly in large used oak foudres so the fruit and terroir, not the wood, do the talking. Germain has made Roches Neuves one of the great names in biodynamic winegrowing in France, and this site-specific Cabernet Franc shows why. This is the 2015, a warm and ripe Loire vintage; at a decade old it has matured into deep, savory complexity. "The 2015 Saumur Champigny Les Mémoires opens with a deep, ripe and concentrated yet very delicate, pure and authentic nose of dark fruits (mainly cherries but also cassis) intertwined with floral (violets!), earthy and even crystalline aromas. Full-bodied, intense and concentrated on the palate and provided with fine tannins and a lot of mineral energy, this is an impressive Cabernet from a 0.7-hectare parcel with 110+-year-old, ungrafted vines on marl and silex soils. Fermented with 20% whole clusters in a 1,200-liter Stockinger foudre, where it was also aged until the bottling, this is a charming but highly energetic Cabernet with perfect ripeness." —Stephan Reinhardt
