A 1999 Taurasi Riserva with more than a quarter-century of age: a rare chance to taste what Montemarano Aglianico turns into once time has done its work. Salvatore Molettieri's family had made wine in Montemarano for at least four generations before he stopped selling his grapes to others in 1983. His first bottled vintage was 1988, so this comes from the estate's first dozen years of bottling. Montemarano is historically one of Taurasi's two finest crus. Vigna Cinque Querce, in the Iampenne district, sits at around 500 metres or higher on south-east-facing clay-limestone. Some of the vineyard's Aglianico vines predate phylloxera and still grow on their own roots. Aglianico is a grape built for the long haul, and a mature Riserva from a cru like this is the payoff for that patience. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead and decant gently off any sediment.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Saturated medium ruby. Explosive, high-toned nose dominated by dark berries, baking chocolate and menthol. Fat, lush and superripe, with very rich, concentrated flavors of cassis, bitter chocolate and menthol. Bordering on volatile, but big, sweet and satisfying. Finishes with big, chewy, ripe tannins and excellent peppery length." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 1999 Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce is a superlative example of Aglianico in its inky ruby color, explosive nose of raspberry and blackberry fruit, violets, lava rock, and tar, and its dense and sumptuous flavors, mouth-filling, velvety, deep, and exceptionally long and resonant. The bad news is that this is a limited edition wine." —Daniel Thomases

More about Salvatore Molettieri

Salvatore Molettieri founded his Taurasi winery in 1983 and turned it into the reference point for Aglianico. His four sons joined him, making these powerful, elegant wines from the Cinque Querce vineyard. The intro Taurasi spends four years in large oak casks and French barriques. Reserve expressions go longer. This is southern Italian viticulture treated with absolute seriousness—tannic, minerally, age-worthy Aglianico at its best.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pappardelle with wild boar ragù; lamb shanks braised with rosemary and red wine; roast venison with porcini; a board of aged Pecorino and Caciocavallo.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of a mature Taurasi Riserva: dried cherry and plum giving way to tar, leather, tobacco, earth and dried herbs. With long age, Aglianico's firm tannins typically soften while its acidity stays lively, so the full body still feels fresh through a long, savoury finish. Think of a mature Barolo, only darker and more rustic.
