Tegan Passalacqua's Sandlands project rescues California's overlooked heritage varieties from oblivion, and this Chenin Blanc is a quiet manifesto. Fruit comes from a single dry-farmed, head-trained, own-rooted parcel in Amador County's Sierra Foothills, planted in 1979 in a mix of iron-rich volcanic, quartz, and decomposed granite soils at roughly 1,500 feet elevation. Tegan, longtime winemaker at Turley, treats it with the same low-intervention reverence he gives century-old Zinfandel. The result is a Chenin with cut, salinity, and the kind of stony grip that makes you reconsider what California Chenin can be. Bottlings are tiny; the wine disappears as soon as it lands.

"The 2023 Chenin Blanc (Amador County) is the most complete of the three whites I tasted for this report. Aromatic, bright and lifted, the 2023 possesses gorgeous floral lift and nuance. White flowers, citrus peel, chalk, mint and slate give this understated wine tons of detail. My only regret is not having been able to follow this for more time." —Antonio Galloni

More about Sandlands

Tegan Passalacqua, Winemaker of the Year, builds Sandlands around forgotten California grape varieties and site-specific precision. These are wines about place, not ego—low yields, old vineyards, real depth in the glass.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pair with roast chicken, pork loin with apples, aged goat cheese, grilled trout, Vietnamese summer rolls, or a frisee salad with lardons and poached egg. Versatile with anything from weeknight pasta to richer fish preparations.

Tasting Profile

Dry, medium-bodied, and bright. Quince, yellow apple, lemon pith, chamomile, and beeswax over decomposed-granite minerality. Saline mid-palate, a wash of orchard fruit, and a long, stony, slightly bitter-citrus finish.
