Old-vine California from one of the new wave's true icons. Sandlands is the personal project of Tegan Passalacqua, who spent two decades at Turley and seeks out forgotten varieties on own-rooted, dry-farmed sites, exactly the kind of energetic, detailed California goodness Flatiron has championed since opening. This Mataro (the old name for Mourvedre) comes from gnarly, century-old vines grown in the sandy soils of Contra Costa, farmed minimally and made with a light hand so the place speaks. Expect something earthy and savory rather than jammy, with the freshness that defines Tegan's wines. Quantities are always small.
