A remarkable old Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba, now more than four decades on and a genuine piece of Piedmont history. Schiavenza is a small, deeply traditional Serralunga estate founded in 1956 by the Alessandria brothers - the name comes from the local dialect for sharecropping - and now run by two sisters and their families. They work the old way: native yeasts, long maceration, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti, the recipe for Barolos built to last generations. This is a back-vintage bottle from a private collection, and surviving 1982s of this caliber are rare survivors indeed, showing the tertiary tar, dried-flower, leather and earth complexity of fully mature Nebbiolo. Decant gently, expect some sediment, and savor it as the rarity it is.
