Serafino Rivella makes Barbaresco the way it used to be made, and that's the whole point: deeply traditional, slow-evolving wines from a tiny family operation that, when they step into their garden, find themselves in one of the greatest places on earth for Nebbiolo. Montestefano is the muscular, structured cru of Barbaresco, often called the most Barolo-like of them all, and Rivella's hands-off, old-school approach lets the site speak in full. The 2013 was a classic, structured vintage with vibrant acidity and firm tannins, exactly the kind of year Rivella's traditional style was made for, giving a wine built for the long haul. It's stately and elegant, drinking well now with a generous decant but with years of evolution ahead. A taste of Barbaresco's past, made in the present.
