Proper grower Champagne in 375ml: two generous glasses of the real thing, and an easy way to meet one of the Côte des Bar's most thoughtful growers without opening a full bottle. Rémi Leroy trained in Bordeaux as both an oenologist and an agricultural engineer, then came home to Meurville to farm the family domaine with his father. Most of their vines grow on hillsides of Kimmeridgian limestone, the same soil as Chablis. He sells a little under half his fruit to négociant houses and keeps the best parcels for himself. This Extra Brut is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from Meurville, Bergères and Fontaine. It's built on the 2022 vintage, with reserve wine from a solera Rémi started in 2009, so every bottle carries a thread of more than a decade of earlier harvests. It spends 18 to 20 months on its lees. Rémi's motto, "More than Champagne, Champagne wine," tells you what he's after: a sparkling wine that tastes of where it was grown.

More about Remi Leroy

Richard Leroy (the person behind this small operation was originally from Paris—left a banking career in 1996 to become a winemaker, which is either the most romantic or most insane career pivot ever). Tiny parcels of organic, later biodynamic Chenin Blanc in Coteaux du Layon, declassified to IGP Vin de France because he got tired of the administrative nonsense. Minimal intervention, volcanic soils, and the kind of purity that made him a cult figure after a comic strip about him went viral. Rare and obsessive.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Warm gougères; oysters on the half shell; smoked trout rillettes on toast; buttermilk fried chicken; a wedge of aged Comté or Chaource, the local Aube cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the Pinot Noir-led Côte des Bar style: red apple, pear and a hint of red berries, with citrus and a chalky, Chablis-like minerality from the Chardonnay and the limestone soils. It is typically fine-bubbled and taut, and the low Extra Brut dosage keeps it very dry. Lees ageing and reserve wine add a gentle nutty, bready depth before a long, saline finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
